7 DIY Natural Skincare Ideas

There’s no better way of being sure there are no chemical nasties in your skincare than by taking charge and making your own natural skincare at home. It needn’t be complicated, but it can certainly deliver divinely pampering products, so it’s worth giving it a go.

Why choose natural skincare

Oh, where do we start?! There are dozens of reasons why natural skincare is kinder to you and kinder to the environment, so we’re just going to take you on a whistle stop tour of our favourite reasons:

  • Natural is better for the environment: No chemical run-off in local ecosystems, no plastic packaging, no burning of fossil fuels to ramp up the carbon footprint and no mining for aluminium are just a selection of the reasons why natural equals nicer in the green stakes.

  • It’s so rich in the good stuff: Why are we reaching for chemical formulations when nature has given us so many nutrient-rich offerings? When coconut oil contains antibacterial properties to soothe skin and antioxidants that help minimise the signs of ageing, why would you reach for a chemical instead? What about the goodness of ingredients like tea tree oil, oats, Aloe Vera, sea salt… shall we go on? All the while, you’re also avoiding nasties like parabens.

  • Safety is easier to guarantee: A crazy list of nonsensical ingredients poses a huge challenge for identifying the culprit when reactions to skincare happen. With natural, ingredients lists are usually minimal, and everything has a name you recognise. Skincare ingredients are absorbed and enter the bloodstream. It makes sense to avoid putting things on your skin that you wouldn’t happily eat. And what about our lessons from history? Natural has been used for longer!

  • It’s easier to choose vegan when you choose natural: Did you know that lots of animal products are used in the manufacturing of mainstream skincare? From fish scales in shimmery face powder to lanolin from sheep in makeup remover, a lot of skincare isn’t vegan. If you choose natural, you can clearly identify whether an ingredient is plant-based or not.

  • It’s cheaper: Making natural homemade skincare is cost-effective. You can make a natural scrub (see below) for mere pennies compared to a branded synthetic version. You can get higher quality products for less.

Have we got you convinced? It’s time to have a go at making some natural skin care yourself.

Making your own natural skincare at home

Lots of our regular orders of coconut products aren’t just used for edible delights. Coconut products are incredibly versatile and can form the base of so many homemade natural skincare recipes. Take your pick from the DIY natural skincare ideas below:

1.Coconut Scrub

Take ½ cup warmed (not hot) organic coconut oil and mix with 1 cup of organic coconut sugar for a pleasurable exfoliating scrub. Mix them together, add a couple of dashes of your favourite essential oil, and pop into a jar. You can swap out the sugar for sea salt or Himalayan salt if you prefer.

2.Silky Coconut Milk Face Mask

We adore this recipe from The Soap Queen for a gloriously soft face mask using coconut milk powder. Gently scented, it gives your skin a real burst of nurturing goodness.

3.Probiotic Rose & Coconut Milk Cleanser

Fabulous for those with troublesome outbreaks, vegan and fabulous at delivering a shot of probiotics to your skin, you can make this cleaner with ease. Simply grab a jar with a lid. In it put the contents of 6 live probiotic capsules, 3 tbsp coconut milk powder, 1 tbsp water, 3 tbsp coconut nectar and 3 tsp rosewater. Get shaking like the very best cocktail maker and there you have it. To use, warm the cleanser slightly in your hands, massage into your skin, and rinse with water.

4.Coconut vinegar hair tonic

Coconut vinegar is a remarkable ingredient, delivering fantastic nutrients straight to you. You can make a very simple hair tonic to nourish your hair and even help work against hair loss. Just dilute 1 cup coconut vinegar with 1 cup water. After washing your hair, simply pour the tonic over your hair, leave for several minutes and then rinse.

5.Creamy Coconut Moisturiser

It doesn’t get much easier than making some homemade natural moisturiser by simply whipping up some organic coconut oil. All you need is some coconut oil and a whisk. Beating some air into the oil gives it a body butter texture which makes it heavenly to apply. We (of course!) love the subtle coconut scent, but if you prefer you can add a few drops of an essential oil to give it an aroma that evokes good feelings in you. Try lavender for a sleep-inducing night cream.

6.Dry Skin Healer

All you need to do is reach for a jar of organic coconut oil and rub a little into any area of dry skin to help it on its way to healing. Coconut oil is naturally anti-inflammatory, and the oil locks the moisture in. You don’t even need to get your DIY persona on the scene! However, if you’ve got slightly sore patches of dry skin then you can add a few drops of healing tea tree oil to the mix.

7.Coconut Milk and Oat Bath Soak

Oats are anti-inflammatory and calming, and coconut milk is rich in vitamin E and moisturising lauric acid. For a pampering and soothing bath soak add ½ cup ground oats, ½ cup coconut milk powder and 1 tbsp coconut nectar to your warm bath water. Get in, lie back and relax!

Natural skincare is simple skincare

As you can see, natural skincare needn’t be complicated. It’s so easy that you can often make it in moments at home without any specialist equipment. Still too much like hard work? Did you know that The Coconut Company supplies lots of coconut goodies to glorious companies like LUSH for their handmade natural products? Let them do the hard work whilst you just get on with the important job of pampering!
